Mitochondria help drive inflammation in aging cells through two pathways

A study · Developmental cell · Oct 14, 2026

What this means

Cells that stop dividing can cause lasting inflammation. This work found that citrate metabolism in mitochondria helps drive that inflammation. It does not show what this means for people.

Abstract

Senescent cells develop a persistent inflammatory signature with broad consequences for tissue function and disease. Martini et al.1 show that mitochondrial citrate metabolism drives inflammation through a pathway that acts independently of mitochondrial DNA-driven immune signaling yet cooperates with it to amplify the inflammatory response.
